3 Safe Ways to Pull a Car Out of a Ditch

There are many contributing factors as to why your vehicle is now stuck in a ditch on the side of the road. It could be a combination of anything from oil spills and slippery roads, to poor vision, bald tires, low tire pressure, distracted driving, and all types of harsh or dangerous weather conditions. Overall, there are many reasons why car wind up in ditches. The good news is that you have several options to choose from, all of which will help to ensure your safety, protect your vehicle, and get you back on the road again.

Continue reading to learn what you can do to pull your car out of a ditch in the safest way possible.

Secure Your Safety Before You Begin

Even though you are on the side of the road, you are still vulnerable. So, the very first task you have after driving into a ditch is ensuring your safety and the safety of your passengers if you have any. Do this by first by turning off your ignition and putting your hazard lights on. Next, you will need to also put your parking brake on to prevent sliding down further into the recession. If you are in a high-traffic area or on a dangerous roadway, you should contact police and inform them of your accident so they can help block traffic.

3 Ways of Getting a Car Out of a Ditch:

Alter Your Vehicle’s Weight

If your vehicle was not damaged, you might be able to drive it out of the ditch yourself. Do this by adjusting your vehicle’s weight. If you have heavy items in the backseat or trunk, get rid of them temporarily. This includes all passengers. Just be sure they are safe and far from the side of the road. A lighter load can help your car get out. Also be sure to remove your parking brake before trying to drive out. If you are stuck in snow or mud, you will actually need the extra weight to gain traction. This brings us to your next option.

Add Some Traction

Your car is stuck because it lacks a sufficient amount of traction to grab the ground and propel itself out. To remedy this problem, find some traction. If you have rear wheel drive, place something that will provide traction behind the rear tires. If you have front wheel drive, place these items in front of the front tires. Items that may work include carpet mats, sand, cardboard, clothing, and blankets.

Contact a 24 Hour Tow Truck for Emergency Roadside Assistance

It is pointless to try over and over again if your car is stuck. After a few attempts, if you are not successful, it is time to contact an Indianapolis roadside assistance towing company. They have the proper equipment to safely pull your car out of a ditch. They operate on a 24 hour basis, and can respond to your location quickly because they are dispatched from the road. Their rates are fair as long as you choose a reputable and experienced towing service.

The 7 Automotive Fluids Required for All Cars

A vehicle operates best when its fluids are well-maintained and kept at their proper levels. There are seven chief fluids in every vehicle that work together to promote a smoother drive and optimal vehicular performance.  These fluids assist in the main functions of various automotive parts; such as the engine, transmission, and braking systems.  Without these essential fluids, a vehicle will quickly deteriorate and experience complications. This leads to costly repairs, parts replacements, or a totaled vehicle.

Continue reading to learn about these seven critical solutions and fluids, and how they work together to support a well-operating vehicle.

Emergency Tow Truck 317-247-8484
Emergency Tow Truck 317-247-8484

Motor Oil

The first fluid to mention is motor oil, because it is the most valuable and important. Without motor oil, a car’s engine is running without any lubrication between its moving parts. This can cause high heat and friction, leading to piston damage, valve damage, and more. It is dangerous and can cause severe and irrevocable damage to a vehicle’s engine. Any car with an internal combustion engine requires motor oil to lubricate its moving components.

Brake Fluid

Brake fluid is another important and vital necessity for any vehicle. A brake line system is a sealed network that applies hydraulic pressure to control a vehicle’s ability to come to a stop.  When pressure is applied to a brake pedal, brake fluid compresses. This causes the hydraulic force to transfer to the brake pads and shoes and produce the required friction necessary to stop. Without brake fluid, a vehicle will have complications with stopping and using the brakes. This is very dangerous. A car must be able to stop!

Power Steering Fluid

Power steering fluid is used to assist the driver in turning the car easier. The power steering fluid is pressurized by a small hydraulic pump that is powered by the vehicle’s engine. It releases enough fluids that make the steering mechanism easier to direct and operate. Without power steering fluid, turning a steering wheel would require an abundant amount of effort and force.

Coolant

Coolant is another very important fluid in a vehicle. It is a heat-transfer fluid that controls the temperature levels within your engine. Without it, a car engine would quickly overheat, causing severe damages to the engine and its components. Coolant is generally a half and half formula, containing fifty percent water and fifty percent radiator coolant solution. It works by cycling through the engine as it runs, collecting heat and returning it to the radiator, then into the air.

Transmission Fluid

This fluid is not one commonly checked by car owners, but rather by a mechanic during an annual tune-up or inspection. Transmission fluid is important because it lubricates and cools the inner components of the transmission. This allows everything to engage and work properly. It’s job is very similar to motor oil.

Battery Fluid

Many vehicles today are manufactured with maintenance-free batteries; however, some older models will require a vehicle owner to manually replace the battery fluid on a regular basis. In these type of vehicle batteries, the individual cells need to be filled with the proper type of battery fluid in order for the vehicle to run.

Windshield Wiper Fluid

Although commonly overlooked, a driver could almost not live without windshield wiper fluid! Mud, dirt, water spots, insects, fingerprints, and more can be distracting on a vehicle’s windshield. Windshield wiper fluid is a soapy viscous solution that can be controlled manually by a push of a button inside the car. This button or attachment is generally near the steering wheel. Depending on how often it is used, windshield wiper fluid should be refilled every few months or so.

What You Need to Know About Changing Your Car’s Oil

Oil changes are a critical part of your vehicle’s routine maintenance schedule. If you want your car to perform well and last a long time, it is vital to change the oil as recommended by the manufacturer.

Unfortunately, oil changes are much like dentist appointments; we know we need them, we mean to get them, but we often overlook making an actual appointment. Everyday life distractions like work, school, kids, and activities can make it easy to put car maintenance on the back burner. But in order to properly care for your car, you must regularly schedule a time to have the oil and filters changed. By learning more about the importance of oil changes, you may be more inclined to get them done when the time comes. Continue reading to do just that!

When to Get an Oil Change

Car experts, repair technicians, dealerships, and mechanics all recommend having your oil changed in your vehicle at least every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. It depends on the type of oil the vehicle consumes. Synthetic oils tend to last longer than conventional oils. A fun fact is that many enthusiast and designers are coming out with newer cars that can go nearly ten thousand miles before needing an oil change!

If You Skip Oil Changes

If you neglect to change your car’s oil, costly damages can occur. Things like engine sludge and overheating will begin to deteriorate the performance quality of your vehicle. The oil is what keeps the metal parts from moving around smoothly, and with this lubricant absent, friction and heat can severely damage the car.

Dark and Dirty Oil

It is common for people to think that having dark oil is a bad sign. Although it implies that the oil is dirty and requires changing, it also means that it is doing its job. If your oil is lighter in color on the dipstick, such as the color of tea, it is still in good shape and does not required a change just yet. Having no oil at all is something to be concerned about.

How to Drive Safe in Snowy Weather

Winter road conditions can range from minor to unmanageable. Snow, ice, fog, rain, and more can cause interstates and roadways to freeze and thaw, resulting in hazardous driving conditions. Not only does winter precipitation make roads slippery and dangerous, and windshields impossible to see through, the freeze-thaw cycles also deteriorate pavement; thus creating potholes and crumbling concrete, making it even more difficult and dangerous to drive on. It is important for all drivers to review the safety rules for driving in snow, ice, and more. Continue reading to do just that!

Advice for Driving in Snow

When it comes to driving in snow, it is vital to never accelerate or decelerate too abruptly. This will cause skidding and you can easily lose control of the vehicle. Not only does this put yourself and your passengers in danger, it also jeopardizes other drivers on the road. In order to retain traction and not skid, simply put pressure on the gas in a slow and steady manner. If you start to skid, release a little pressure and start again. The same method applies to decelerating. Never slam on the brakes in snow, unless you want to start spinning out of control! In snow, you must practice applying the brake earlier than usual, and doing so in a slow and steady fashion.

Before the snow comes, it is imperative to have your vehicles inspected and serviced by a licensed mechanic to ensure all fluids, tires, and auto parts are ready to go. This includes driving with at least a half of a tank of gas to avoid your car’s gas lines from freezing. Never use cruise control on snowy roads and avoid using the parking brake unless parked on an incline. These are other important safety precautions for winter driving.

Another obvious and important tips for driving in snow is to take your time! Leave early on so you are never in a rush, because driving slow is the most effective way to navigate safely in snow. So not only do you need to accelerate and decelerate slowly, you need to also driver slower than the speed limits suggests. Remember, speed limits are just that, limits. In adverse weather, it is expected of drivers to reduce their speeds below that of the recommended speed limit. Even a little rain can cause a slip up and subsequent car accident.

One mistake many drivers can make in the winter snow is stopping mid-hill or incline. If you are driving up a hill in snow, don’t stop! This can result in your vehicle sliding backward down the hill, possibly into other vehicles. At the same time, do not power-up hills either. Applying more gas to get up a hill can result in sliding and skidding. Simply gain inertia before the hill, and then remain at a consistent and constant speed to make it all the way up.

When in Doubt, Just Stay Home!

One of the best tips for driving in snow is to just stay home if you can! Of course this is not possible for everyone with jobs, school, kids, and other similar mandatory obligations; however, if you don’t have to leave your home and drive in poor weather, then don’t. If you are forced to drive in poor conditions and find yourself stuck or stranded, simply contact a local 24 hour roadside assistance company for safe and reliable service.

Put a Roadside Emergency Kit in Your Car

Most of us, especially us seasoned drivers, have experienced a sudden blown tire or over-heating engine at some point in our driving careers. When these kinds of incidents would happen, we would safely navigate the vehicle to the shoulder of the road and take a look at the damage. In this scenario, would your roadside emergency been easier to handle had you owned an emergency roadside assistance kit? Think about it. A roadside emergency kit can mean the difference between a simple DIY repair, or a long wait for a tow.

No one wants to be stuck walking miles to a service station, or waiting hours on a tow truck. Many on-the-road disasters can be fixed or better-assisted with an emergency roadside kit. Continue reading to learn exactly what these kits contain, and where to get one for yourself and your fellow driving friends or loved ones!

Roadside Emergency Kits

There are several dangers associated with being stranded in a parking lot or on the side of the road. On-coming traffic collisions are a huge threat to anyone shouldered on the road with a broken down vehicle. This is especially true for highways. Vehicles at high speeds, combined with distracted driving, can mean that a driver might not see a person and hit them or their stranded vehicle. And parking lots can leave a person susceptible to car theft and muggings. You can’t always be prepared for all roadside emergencies, and you certainly can’t always prevent them, but an emergency kit for your car is a responsible and effective way to safeguard from several other obstacles.

Choosing a Kit

Emergency roadside assistance kits come in various sizes and packages. There are simple basic kits you can purchase with just jumper cables, gloves, electrical tape, rain poncho, and a few tools. These 10 to 30-piece kits are great for teen drivers and anyone who doesn’t commute long distances on a regular basis. For more devoted drivers, or people who drive long distances regularly, it is recommended to consider more comprehensive roadside kits. These kinds of kits cost more, but contain a lot more stuff. Things like jumper cables, gloves, screwdrivers, sockets, electrical tape, and more come standard, but these kits should also have emergency flares, hazard flags, reflective gear, tire jack, flashlight, AA batteries, wrench, and even a small medical kit. These kits can come in anything from 30-piece kits, to 70-piece kits, and larger. The right kit for you depends on the size of your vehicle, your town’s geography, and your driving practices.

Here are some common items found in a standard roadside emergency kit:

⚑ First Aid Kit
⚑ Reflector Triangles
⚑ Road Flares
⚑ Whistle
⚑ Jumper Cables
⚑ Car Jack
⚑ Duct Tape
⚑ Electrical Tape
⚑ Fire Extinguisher
⚑ AA Batteries
⚑ Pliers
⚑ Screw Drivers
⚑ Sockets
⚑ Utility Knife
⚑ Gloves
⚑ Safety Vest
⚑ Blanket
⚑ And More

Was Your Car Just Towed in Downtown Indianapolis?

It was there, and now it’s not. But don’t panic.

Here’s what to do to get it back fast!

Car Towed in Downtown Indianapolis 317-247-8484

Car Towed in Downtown Indianapolis 317-247-8484

It’s a common scenario that’s happened to most of us, your car is not where you parked it last. Once you have dealt with the immediate feeling of anxiety and panic, you realize that your car has probably been towed, and then the rage sets in. But it’s okay, because, although it was not in your daily plans, there are quick and simple steps you can take that will lead you to a happier place, and getting your car back. Continue reading to learn how to get started.

Locate Informational Parking Signs

First, look for a sign in the parking lot, or near the parking spot, that contains the tow company information. These signs are usually rectangular in shape and white. They have the contact information of the assigned tow company that handles the towing for that parking lot. Just call the number and talk to the receptionist. Explain to them that your car is missing and you think it was towed. Give them the following information: the address of the parking lot, the make and model of the vehicle, and your name. The receptionist should check their inventory and see if your particular vehicle is in their possession. If it is, they will give you directions on how to get to their establishment.

If They DO NOT Have Your Car

If they say they do not have your vehicle, then most likely, it has not been towed. If you are leasing or financing your vehicle, it could have be repossessed. If that is not a possibility, then perhaps your car was stolen. In this case, hang up and immediately call the police. Do not dial 911, because it is not a life or death emergency. The police will dispatch an on-duty officer in the area to come by and take down your information. Sometimes they may even offer you a ride home.

If They DO Have Your Car

If the tow yard does have your vehicle, then catch a ride to the establishment, and be prepared to provide the necessary information needed to retrieve your car. You’ll need updated proof of insurance on the vehicle, a valid drivers’ license, the title to the car in your name, and the amount of money required for the fine. If you can present all these things to the tow company, you immediately get your car returned to you hassle-free.

How to Use Your Mirrors When Towing

Indianapolis Towing Company 317-247-8484

Indianapolis Towing Company 317-247-8484

The most important part of towing is safety. And one area of towing safety to practice and perfect is your ability to use your vehicle’s mirrors. They are there for a very good reason: to provide a wider scope of vision for drivers on and off the road. They should be used for backing up, driving in reverse, changing lanes, and more. Are you guilty of the head turn? Or perhaps the popular twist and turn to see behind you? These are poor driving habits that can cause minor to major accidents, muscle strains, and backaches.

If you are a driver, especially one that tows a trailer on a regular basis, you ought to learn the right method to using your mirrors when towing. Continue reading for tips to do just that!

Clean Mirrors

It may sound obvious, but it is a step that can be easily overlooked in the tedious process of hooking up and loading your trailer. Keeping your mirrors clean will give them more clarity, and will provide better depth perception and detailed view. It can be easy to forget, and often, mirrors won’t even appear dirty enough for a wipe-down. But don’t let that fool you. After grabbing a paper towel and some glass cleaner, you will be surprised to see just how much dirt actually comes off!

Install Bigger Mirrors

If you are towing loads with a trailer recurrently, consider larger mirrors. The general rule is for every 10 feet of vehicle, your mirror should be 1 inch in diameter. This includes the length of your towing vehicle plus the length of the load or trailer you are towing. So if your towing vehicle and trailer’s total length equals 50 feet, your mirrors should be 5 inches in diameter. Be sure your mirrors are the proper height and width, and if they are not, it is wise to replace your stock mirrors with larger ones. You can find specialty-sized truck and vehicle mirrors that are wider, bigger, and fold backwards, all for a reasonable price.

Adjust Mirrors Properly

It is important that your mirrors are not only big enough, but adjusted properly as well. While in the driver’s seat, you want to maximize the visible ground area below the vehicle. This improves on blind spots and enhances child safety. Test or reset the position of your mirrors by first sitting in the driver’s seat with the mirrors pointed straight so they are perpendicular (think of the letter “t”) with the road. Then one at a time, starting with the left, begin to move the mirrors outwards. Stop when you can see at least 200 feet behind the left side of your vehicle. Have a friend sit in the passenger seat to help with the right side.
