Do Not Use a Hitch-Mounted Carrier Lift with a Trailer Hitch Adapter

If you have a hitch-mounted wheelchair or scooter lift that you wish to install on a vehicle, it is not recommended to use it with a trailer hitch adapter. There are many hazards that can arise from this arrangement, such as asset damage, vehicular damage, and even traffic accidents. Continue reading to learn why you should not pair a hitch-mounted carrier with a trailer hitch adapter, and what you can do instead for optimal safety and performance.

Indianapolis Roadside Assistance & Towing 317-247-8484
Indianapolis Roadside Assistance & Towing 317-247-8484

Why It Won’t Work

Why should you not use your hitch-mounted carrier with a trailer hitch adapter? Well, hitch receivers with a 1¼ inch opening are not designed with the proper tongue weight capacity to support the total weight of the carrier and the asset it is holding. For this reason, it is vital that you are fully aware of your vehicle’s limitations before you choose a particular carrier or lift.

Keep in mind, if you were to use your hitch-mounted carrier with a trailer hitch adapter, you are literally cutting your tongue weight capacity in half. For this reason, this combination should only be used on vehicles with stiff suspensions, such as full-size pickup trucks, truck-style SUVs, and large vans.

Hitch Class Ratings and Tongue Weight

Most often, cars and minivans have Class 1 or 2 hitches, while trucks and sports utility vehicles usually have Class 3, 4, or 5 hitches. Knowing your vehicle’s tongue weight, hitch class, and rating is an essential part of safely using a wheelchair or scooter lift. Usually, such lifts require at least a Class 3 hitch rating. How do you find your vehicle’s hitch class? Simply refer to the manufacturer label on the trailer hitch. If it is an old lift and the label is not clear, you can also measure the opening yourself.

As for tongue weight, see our blog, “A Brief Explanation of Tongue Weight (TW)” to learn what you need to know. Basically, tongue weight is the downward force that is applied onto a vehicle’s trailer hitch. In terms of a wheelchair/scooter lift, the tongue weight is measured by adding the total weight of the lift and the asset, together. Beware, an improper setup can lead to your carrier and asset bending downward toward the road and breaking off the trailer hitch.

Refer to your vehicle’s owners’ manual for manufacturer’s recommended tongue weight. If you cannot locate your manual, you can look up these values online, or you can adhere to the general rule of thumb, which is that your tongue weight should not exceed 10% of your gross trailer weight. See our blog, “A Review of Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings” to learn how to measure your vehicle’s gross weight rating, and how to apply it with your carrier.

Alternatives and Tips

Aside from hitch classes, tongue weight, and gross weight ratings, is also important to pay attention to the height of the hitch. Lower hitch heights can put your carrier at risk of scraping against sidewalks, curbs, and driveways. To avoid this, be sure to install a hitch height adapter. If you have not yet purchased a wheelchair/scooter carrier, start by measuring your wheelchair or scooter dimensions. Measure the length and width (from the outside tires), as well as the total weight of the asset, including the battery and any accessories (ramps, straps, etc.).

The Differences Among Light, Medium, and Heavy-Duty Tows

Indianapolis Towing & Recovery 317-247-8484

Indianapolis Towing & Recovery 317-247-8484

A towing company is also referred to as a wrecker company. This is because they do more than just tow vehicles. A professional wrecker company provides a wide-range of towing and recovery services for all types of commodities and conditions. They are also common providers of roadside assistance services, like flat tires, jump starts, fuel delivery, fluid re-fills, and more. All of the wrecker services commonly offered by towing companies can be categorized into three main categories: light, medium, and heavy duty.

Continue reading to learn what these term means and what types of services fall into each category.

Light Duty Towing

In the light-duty towing category, you are likely to find all the standard and frequent towing services offered to the public on a routine basis. Things like towing abandoned cars or trucks, private property towing, traffic collision and accident clearing, and more. These tows, and one’s similar, are all small to medium-sized jobs that generally require a regular tow truck and tow operator. Any vehicle that is similar to the size of a car, minivan, or truck is considered a light-duty tow. For larger vehicles and commodities, a larger truck may be needed, putting them in the medium-duty towing category.

Medium-Duty and Heavy-Duty Tows

Larger trucks, vans, watercrafts, construction equipment, semi-trucks, trailers, duplexes, airplanes, extra-large loads, and more are examples of medium to heavy-duty towing. Water recovery services are included in this as well. That is when a vehicle has become submerged underwater after an accident. Storm damage clearing is another heavy duty project, involving lifting massive trees that have fallen on homes, or heavy debris clearing.

As you can see, these types of companies have a lot to offer our local towns and neighborhoods. When it comes to Indianapolis wrecker services, whenever you need them, they are there for you in a flash! A simple three minute phone call is all it takes! Be sure to choose a wrecker company with extensive experience and longevity in the industry. It is also important that your service of choice is licensed and fully-equipped to undertake the project you need, in a safe and efficient manner.

Vital Information You Need to Know About Towing a Car, Truck, or Trailer

Indianapolis Towing 317-247-8484

Indianapolis Towing 317-247-8484

Safety is the number one concern when it comes to towing a vehicle or hauling a load. Before tackling a tow job, novice or not, it is important to understand the risks, and know how to avoid them. Knowing important and vital towing safety tips can protect yourself, passengers, other drivers, and your property at all times and for every load. Continue reading to learn more about towing safety, and be better prepared for your next haul.

Towing Safety Tips

There are so many more easily-available and more-affordable commodities on the market today that requires towing; like boats, motorcycles, jet skis, campers, and more. With this exponential increase of the towing population, an equal amount of towing safety awareness is necessary. Let’s start with certain areas and accessories of a tow truck and haul, and what to know about each.

Safety Chains

When it comes to towing safety, you can never be too concerned about safety chains. Always be sure they are properly attached and secured before every drive. If safety chains are poorly tended to, it can result in the trailer separating from the truck or SUV. Not only can this cause significant property damage to your equipment and everyone else’ s nearby, it can result in serious injuries and worse, fatalities. These are mandatory by law so stay legal by using them for every tow. Be sure the chains cross under the trailer tongue in the accidental case that it gets separated, but also be sure they are loose enough to make turns. It chains are too loose, they can drag on the ground and create a whole load of road hazards. They need to be secured just right.

When towing a load of any kind, it is critical that the traffic behind you can see your brake lights and know when you are coming to a stop. With this being said, it is important to check that your trailer’s brake lights are functional and bright enough, as well as, the brakes on your truck or SUV. Check that your turn signals are working as well, and be sure to do these things before every drive. Even if you stop for lunch, or visit multiple locations, check your lights every time. You never know when a bulb decides to go out. If your trailer didn’t come with a wiring harness, you can purchase one at any automotive parts store. Not only is it the law to have operational brake, head, and turn signal lights, it is the difference between a safe tow, and a tow that ends in accidents and injuries.

Tow Capacity

Never exceed your towing capacity! It is vital to have the right type of tow hitch for whatever load you intend to haul. Not only is an accurate hitch necessary, but following manufacturers’ instructions for tow weight capacity is critical. You can cause serious damage to the drive chain, which is a costly automotive repair, as well as, dangerous motor vehicle accidents on steep inclines and hills. Check what your vehicle’s tow capacity is, and never exceed this limit. Know how much your load weighs helps too! If you have trouble making this assessment, contact a local Indianapolis wrecker service for accurate industry advice and assistance.

Wrecker Services Offer More than Tows

Indianapolis Towing Company 317-247-8484

Indianapolis Towing Company 317-247-8484

Along with towing, wrecker companies typically offer a variety of related services for automotive assistance.  Towing is the most common service provided by wrecking companies; however, it is not usually the sole service available.  These services are generally overlooked because of the prevalence of roadside assistance programs offered through popular insurance companies.  For those who do not have the luxury of twenty four hour roadside assistance, wrecker services are there to provide the same services around the clock!

Light-Duty Tows

Full service wrecker companies always include light towing services.  This type of towing refers to regular automobiles, jet skis, small trailers, and motorcycles.  This is the most common tow service utilized in residential communities.  These wreckers provide service for situations such as illegally parked cars, car accidents, breakdowns, junk car removal, and more.

Medium/Heavy Duty Tows

Trucks and trailers are common hauls for heavy to medium duty towing.  More medium to heavy tows include boats, RVs, animal trailers, buses, mobile homes, and more.  Professional towing companies are specialized in performing these more complex tows because they are industry trained and experienced, as well as, have all the proper equipment to carry out tows safely.

Jump Starts

Professional towing companies are likely to offer jump start services for dead car batteries.  If a person has left their headlights on for a long period of time, they may discover their engine won’t turn; this is because they have extinguished all the juice in their car battery.  In this case, a professional full-service wrecker company will come out and offer you a jump start at a low cost.  Be sure to use a 24 hour tow company because they are usually the more reputable choice.

Not all, but a few, towing companies will offer lockout services.  If someone has lost their keys to their car, or locked them inside of it, the tow company may come out and unlock the vehicle for you at a lower cost than a standard lock smith.  Be sure to do your research before committing to a locksmith for vehicular lock outs.

Did Your Car Just Break Down in Indianapolis, IN?

What Should I Do When My Car Breaks Down on the Road?

Roadside Assistance Services 317-247-8484

Roadside Assistance Services 317-247-8484

Hopefully, while driving, your car will hint to you that there is a problem. If this is the case, then you have a tiny bit of forewarning to start getting on the right side of the road in case you need to pull over and stop. This goes especially for highway driving. When you’re pulling your car off to the side of the road because you are hearing or feeling something abnormal, follow these safety tips:

Attempt to roll or coast along the shoulder of the road or highway, avoiding turns and curves in the road behind you. That way, oncoming traffic will see you in advance and have time to react and drive around you. This also helps when you are ready to get back on the road, you can see the oncoming traffic too.

Let’s say your engine dies directly in the middle of the highway. What do you do? Well, you DO NOT GET OUT OF THE CAR! It is very dangerous to get out of your car on a busy highway.

Even if the road seems remote, you never know what’s going to come flying out of nowhere. It is important to remain safe. Every feels embarrassed and anxious when your car is dead in the middle of the road and there is traffic piling up behind you, but there is no other option when it comes to safety. You have to remain on your car until help arrives. Trying to cross a busy highway on foot is basically suicide.

Now, if it is dark outside, keep your interior light on so that you are able to be seen by oncoming traffic. If the vehicle is still operating, keep the engine on so that you don’t juice out the battery from keeping the lights on.

The good thing is, most busy highways are heavily patrolled by local police officials and they will more than likely spot you and come to your aid if you don’t have a phone to contact help.

Safety Tips for When Your Car Breaks Down:

So, whether you are stuck in traffic, or parked along the shoulder of the road, always remember these safety tips:

1. Roll a piece of white cloth or paper in your driver’s side window to signal you need help. Be sure you roll the window back up and secure that cloth or paper in its place.

2. Use your cell phone to contact family, your auto insurance, or a local and professional towing company to come to your assistance. If you are not carrying a phone, look to see if there is an emergency call box near your vehicle, it is not safe to get out, but if it is close, try to safely reach it and contact help. Always get right back into the car after using a call box. Keep the doors locked and continue waiting for help. If there is no call box that you can see, do not try to walk down the road and find one, just remain in your car with the white cloth and wait for highway patrol to stop and help you. They will see you, it is their job!

3. If it’s a flat tire or something you can work on yourself, never do these adjustments on the side that’s exposed to busy traffic. IF you can, try to drive the car a little more off the road so that you may reach the side that needs fixed, without being exposed to the traffic.

4. If it is daytime, turn on your hazard lights to warm oncoming traffic. Do not do this at night, it can cause another accident.

5. If it is nighttime, when traffic dies down, quickly place emergency triangles and warning light around your car if you have an emergency car kit. This will warn people that you are broken down and to avoid running into you. If you don’t have an emergency car kit, just keep your interior lights on, but keep your engine running as well if you do this so your battery doesn’t die. If your car engine can’t run, go ahead and keep your interior lights on anyway because it’s safer.

6. Always keep in mind that you are more protected when you are carry a cell phone, and have a road-side assistance company protecting you on the road. Otherwise, a trusting tow company can do all the things road-side assistance can do for you, and usually at a better cost.
